I read this novel in the Indonesia version but I am writing the book experience in English.

This book was published by Gramedia. The English version was originally published by Maria Carvainis Agency, inc. The story was set in 1934 in Texas. It was a time when Texas was ravaged by drought and poverty.

Ella Barron, a middle-aged woman, was the central character of Rainwater. Ella was a powerful woman, but how she could live a bitter life. Her husband left her without a trace because she couldn't stand living with their mentally ill child. Ella made a living by opening an inn. Mr. Rainwater came to rent a room, and their fate changed dramatically without their knowing.

Mr. Rainwater, a pleasant and caring guy, effortlessly attracts sympathy from readers. He slowly melted Ella's frozen heart. Ella herself couldn't handle Solly's attitude, he was able to speak with him. Ella and Rainwater's relationship began to blossom, but the only thing Ella and Rainwater couldn’t buy is time, which haunts their relationship. Rainwater, who was terminally ill, only had a few months left before death grabbed him from them.

In addition to the main figures Ella and Mr. Rainwater, a supporting character for the novel Rainwater, was also shadowed the novel. The antagonist, Conrad Ellis, was very annoying. Ellis was a thug who liked to get drunk and misbehave in the city. Mr. Rainwater didn't stand still till the end.

This book mostly is telling us about the bitter life of Ella and the people in Texas. Even though her life was bitter, she could manage it. She worked hard for her life and her son, Solly. When she used to be alone, suddenly a man came to her and unpredictably he brought love and a warm atmosphere for her. However, the love couldn’t stay any longer. The mas, Mr. Rainwater, had to leave Ella and Solly.

I love how Sandra Brown pictured Solly as an Idiot savant which was not common in Texas. Moreover, autism had not been known yet unlike now.
