Holaaa folks…

I started to read this book about six months ago. However, it had plenty of words I couldn't understand and it confused me. I began to lose interest in this book.

In the last few days, I was determined to finish reading the novel. Finally, I did it last night. This novel was quite difficult to understand since I found new words from it.

 

This novel was published by Coronet Books. The main character was Victoria. She was a young woman who works in a fashion shop. She was not much interested in her job. She lived on her own in London, had either no siblings or no parents. She was dumped by her former boyfriend called Oliver. He left her three years previously.

On the other side, Oliver was a writer experiencing increasing success. He was married but after a few months he broke up with his wife. Later, the wife died in an accident. Short story, he came to his former in-laws’ house.  He was seeing his son he had never met. With a combination of manipulation, chance, and an impulse based on irritation, he finds himself with a two-year-old on his hands. He landed himself on Victoria, persuading her to take a holiday in Scotland with him.

The third character was John, a Scottish-American businessman who flew around the world. He originally lived in London. Then the other characters were Jock and Roddy. The brothers in their sixties lived on a farming estate in Scotland, also Ellen, the one who helped Roddy with the house stuff.

It takes a few chapters before the connections between these people become clear, and it’s perhaps slightly confusing to be introduced to so many individuals right at the start. But the story quickly gets going, following Oliver and Victoria in their journey north, and also seeing the slower way of life that the small Scottish village enjoys.

One day, Oliver had to fly to London for his play. He promised to leave for a day and night. Victoria was happily picking him up at the airport. However, a man came to her and gave her a letter. It was from Oliver. He didn’t come back for a year, two, or never.

I found Oliver as a selfish man. He only looked at his script and focused on his plays. To him other people were tools. He had broken Victoria Bradshaw's heart once. He asked her to go with him. Giving hope. Then, he left her with somebody who was not having a blood relation with her. He left her for his play and flew to America.
